Electric Road Systems - A PIARC Collection of Case Studies
We believe this to be the most current global summary report on Electric Road System (ERS). The report outlines the state of the art in the innovative field of ERS at the time of publication. This is a key deliverable for PIARC Technical Committee 3.5 in the 2024-2027 cycle.
The report focuses on recent use cases within the past 5 years from the countries leading ERS development. A former summary of ERS cases was published by Task Force 2.2 in the 2020-2023 PIARC cycle [1]. Case studies were selected based on their road sector decarbonisation strategies and objectives, life cycle cost analysis, business cases, and analysis of ERS deployment.
This report presents 26 use cases from trials conducted in 7 different countries.
Most of the projects presented are being carried out on open roads or motorways, demonstrating the increasing Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the solutions being tested.
Comparisons between case studies are part of the analysis.
In addition to this report, our work on electric road systems will be presented in the Briefing Note (expected in 2026), a special edition of the Routes/Roads magazine dedicated to ERS, and in the final report of WG2 (expected in 2027).
